WELLER KENNELS
WE ARE CELEBRATING 31 YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL DOG TRAINING Welcome to Wellerland!!!!
John was only nine years old when he began helping his uncle train and handle Labrador Retrievers in the field and at trials. By twelve, he was hunting quail, squirrels, ducks and other game over an Irish-English Setter mix that he had trained by himself. John felt he had a god-given gift and had a dream to be a professional trainer and kennel owner. His dream has been a reality for 30 years. John is down in the record books as the first trainer/owner to become theNorth American Hunting Retriever Association's, NAHRA, first Grand Master Hunting Retriever GMHR Weller's Moses of Anitoch, "Moses". He is featured in N.C. Wildlife Magazine and Sports Afield 100th Anniversary Edition. John has titled several dogs in the NAHRA Retriever Tests as well as competed successfully in AKC Field Trials and Hunt Tests and ESPN's Super Retriever Series. John qualifed his dog Weller's Judgement Day, "Judge" , as one of the twelve retrievers in the country to compete in ESPN's Great Outdoor Games in Lake Placid, N.Y.John's expertise and reputation as an excellent trainer has helped him to achieve a sponsorship with Retriever World. He is part of Team Retriever World as the professional trainer on staff at Retriever World. Over the years, John has trained and handled numerous dogs to Master Hunting Retriever titles and had a hand in the development of dozens of others. He trained and handled the famous Richard Wolters' dogs Tar and Pitch. Richard Wolters is the author of numerous books and videos including "Water Dog", "Gun Dog" and "Family Dog". One of the most recent was Blackburn's Deepwater Kipper MH, "Kipper", the youngest Chesapeake Bay Retriever to ever be named a Master Hunting Retriever at 13 months of age under AKC (American Kennel Club) guidelines. John appreciates the trust that all these owners have bestowed upon him. Anthony Abernathy has gone beyond being our "right hand" man. Anthony began working exclusively under John's tutelage at a tender age of 15 years old. Over this decade, Anthony has grown, learned and excelled in his patience and practice of working with the retrievers and teaching all breeds of dogs. He is extremely attentive to each dog's health and progress in training. Anthony's patience with these dogs is evidenced by his exceptional ability in teaching owners how to work with the education their dog has received. This is by far the more difficult job. With his commonsense attitude, organized mind and good moral standards, we have be blessed with the addition of Anthony as our full-time trainer. In April 2003, John Weller and Janet Herbert were married making a merge of two kennel facilities. Janet has been breeding and raising retrievers as Blue Star Kennel on Maryland's Eastern Shore since 1988 with her quality working chocolate puppies going to international homes as far as Europe and Alaska. She has successfully competed in both NAHRA and AKC Hunt Tests titling a number of her chocolates. Over the years, she has trained numerous hunting dogs, but found a niche with her patience and persitence in starting out youngsters in their training program whether their owners were heading to the duck/goose blind or toward competition. The union of John and Janet as a training team brings a completeness in their approach covering all dog temperaments from the young pups to the advanced dogs. Whether you hunt, want a companion or compete amoung the best dogs in the country, we are dedicated to teaching owners to pursue their desires in the hunt test/field trial circuit or in the field and does take a limited number of dogs on special weekends to compete as they will handle them using their expertise to get the most from these events. Hard work and the gifts that God has given John and Janet have kept them on top as sincere and honest trainers for all breeds of dogs and the problems that may arise in their care and training. John and Janet Weller are retriever trainers with a national reputation.
